Anger at Victimisation of LDC Leader

Lewes Liberal Democrats are appalled by the irresponsible and offensive campaign launched against District Council leader Ann De Vecchi. The District Council has obtained cross-party support from all parties including the Conservatives to continue to oppose the construction of a new stadium at Falmer.

Cllr De Vecchi is merely carrying out her responsibilities as Council leader and should not be subjected to personal attacks or harassment. She has been contacted by the police regarding threatening and offensive letters and emails that she has received and they are monitoring the situation closely and have advised her not to make a statement at this stage.

Lewes Liberal Democrats' Constituency Chairman, Douglas Taylor, said:

"I think the deliberate targeting of Cllr De Vecchi for doing nothing more than carrying out the duties she has been elected to perform is shocking.

"This was a decision taken by the District Council not by Cllr De Vecchi alone and I think that those involved should be ashamed of themselves for trying to target and intimidate a mother with a young family.

"Lewes Liberal Democrats thoroughly condemn this victimisation of Cllr De Vecchi and I would call on those involved to see sense and participate in the process that is taking place.

"There is a place for protest and debate but, I would hope we all could agree, none for intimidation and threatening behaviour."
