Local Liberal Democrats have welcomed the decision by Lewes District Council's planning committee to throw its support behind the campaign to prevent the construction of a large incinerator in Newhaven. Lib Dem councillors on the committee voted unanimously to oppose the application although the final decision lies with the Conservative-controlled County Council.

Newhaven Lib Dem councillor, David Rogers, said: "Once again the Tories have shown their true colours and rubbished chameleon Cameron's shallow commitment to our environment! I know that Liberal Democrats throughout this area will continue to oppose this plan 100%, and will work with local residents and businesses to defeat it."

Lib Dem anti-incinerator activist, Rod Main, also welcomed the news: "This decision once again demonstrates how isolated the Tory County Council is in its desire to force this incinerator upon the people of Newhaven. The District Council has appreciated the devastating impact its construction could have on the local environment not just in Newhaven, but also Seaford and beyond."
