Future Of Tower Mill Sheltered Housing Scheme, Polegate4.27.55pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 30th May 2006
Polegate resident Mrs Rosemary Battles presented two petitions in support of the residents of Tower Mill Place to the Chairman of Wealden District Council on Wednesday 24th May. The petitions will now be considered by the Cabinet of Wealden District Council at their meeting on Wednesday 7th June at the Council Offices at Hailsham. These petitions read "We, the undersigned, are concerned to hear that Tower Mill Place may be closed and its community of residents dispersed. We ask Wealden District Council to put the residents' wishes first and ensure that work can be carried out to improve Tower Mill Place without them being removed." and "The elderly residents in the sheltered housing scheme at Towermill Place have spoken out against the plan to relocate them by the Wealden District Council. Residents are too old to move." Mrs Rosemary Battles said "I presented the petitions containing 2725 signatories to the Council. I would like to thank all those who helped with raising the petitions and have supported the residents of Tower Mill Place to have their wishes and needs placed first in Wealden District Councils decision making about the future of this scheme." Ward District Councillor, Andy Watkins added "I have been very impressed by the very strong community that exists in Tower Mill Place. I hope that the petitions will enable the Council to more clearly focus on what is most important there – the future well being of the elderly residents." County Councillor Roy Martin commented "I know many of the residents as I grew up with them. I am strongly in support of ways being found to allow this strong community of elderly people to continue to live in Tower Mill in peace."
