Lib Dem by-election candidate Peter Gardiner welcomes Beddingham crossing improvements

1.44.50pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 9th Aug 2006

Plans to build a fly-over to cross the railway between roundabouts at the Beddingham junction and Lewes on the A27 have been given the go-ahead by the Department of Transport.

Local Lib Dems have long supported the scheme which would greatly reduce traffic congestion in the surrounding area when trains are passing between Lewes and Glynde.

Peter says of the announcement: "I am pleased that this issue is finally being addressed. When the barriers are down at the Beddingham level crossing it causes tail-backs in both directions and is particularly serious problem during rush hour.

"Local Lib Dems including our MP, Norman Baker, and local County Councillor, Pat Ost, have been pushing for this for some time. I will closely monitor this development to ensure that it delivers benefits, such as reduced traffic through Glynde, but does not impact on the character of villages near the development."
