Lib Dem delight at beach hut success11.11.06pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 4th Dec 2006
Local Lib Dems are thrilled at the positive response from the public to the Town Council's beach hut project at Splash Point and Martello Tower. The ambitious plan involved replacing the existing huts which were in a state of decay as well as upgrading the surrounding area with new roads and street lighting. Leader of the Town Council, Jon Freeman, said of the beach huts' popularity: "People want somewhere they can come and spend time with the grand-children, friends and family and own their place on the beach. It brings a vibrancy and a bit of life to the seafront." The huts were sold for £7,050 each, and immediately paid for themselves. "In stark contrast to the £3,000 annual loss we inherited from the Conservatives we now turn a profit for Seaford people on the beach huts." says local councillor, Kevin Mayers. "We have turned a disaster into a fantastic success-story. It is sad that some people have to be continually negative about what has clearly been a very positive project for the town." The waiting list for new huts currently stands at about 150 and, Jon Freeman, adds: "The list is being added to on a nearly daily basis. Some people have tried to undermine the project and drag it down through their negative attitude. We weren't going to let that minority group harm Seaford's interests in such a way." "This is a story that local people can be very proud of. The huts have improved the seafront for everyone for generations to come."
