Lewes District is leading the way in limiting the amount of waste we put out.

The news that Lewes District has been placed in the top 20 councils nation-wide for waste reduction has been welcomed.

As neighbouring councils scramble for headline-grabbing recycling numbers, Lewes District has achieved the more important feat of reducing its waste altogether!

"We are always hearing recycling stats being trotted out to show how 'green' this or that authority is." says local Bridge campaigner, James MacCleary. "However, the fact that they need to recycle such large amounts says they are producing too much waste."

With the news that the Tory County Council has forced through its deeply unpopular incinerator in Newhaven, reducing our waste has become even more important.

"The Tory County Council has put a financial cap on the amount we can recycle in Lewes District." says local District Councillor, Jim Daly. "They seem intent on ensuring they've got enough waste to feed their monster no matter what the cost!"

Of course the most important people in this success story are local residents.

"Local people have taken the hard choices and decided to reduce and reuse as much as they can." adds James.

"They deserve immense credit, and I hope that others will follow their example."
