Lib Dems object to A259 phone masts10.29.40pm UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 13th Apr 2007
It would appear that the Conservative candidate for Seaford West, is unclear what the Liberal Democrat position is on relation to mobile phone masts. This may well be because the Conservatives are confused by the idea of actually having policies. However, the local Lib Dems have a clear position on this issue. Unfortunately, because of Government Guidance, planning applications cannot be refused on health grounds because as yet it has not been proved whether or not they are a risk to health. Councillor Pat Bennett, when campaigning against mobile phone masts has always quoted directly from the 'Stewart Report' which states: "We conclude therefore it is not possible at present to say that exposures to RF radiation, even at levels below national guidelines, is totally without adverse health effects, and that gaps in knowledge are sufficient to justify a precautionary approach." In her campaigns and letters of objection to the Planning Inspectorate, local campaigner Pat Bennett has also stated: "We want to feel safe, not sorry, as many were assured that there were 'no risks' regarding Asbestos, CJD etc." Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker also shares these concerns and has made this quite clear that he objects to the installation of mobile telephone masts on the A259. Norman Baker has written letters of objection to the Planning Inspectorate on the appeals for both the westerly and easterly end of the Buckle By Pass. Although they can only make recommendations on planning applications, the Liberal democrat controlled Seaford Town Council has on both applications recommended refusal. Pat adds: "It is quite clear what the Liberal Democrat policy is on the installation of mobile telephone masts on the Buckle By Pass. "I am very interested to know what the position of Ian White and his colleagues is, as the Conservative-controlled East Sussex County Council receive a substantial sum of £60,000 each year in the form of rent for mobile masts on its property."
