Local Lib Dems have condemned the decision to sell off North Street car park.

News that the Conservative-run County Council has sold off North Street car park has been met with a mixture of shock and dismay by local residents.

The short-stay car park at the top of North Street is very well used, and vital to a town already overcrowded with traffic.

This news has come hot on the heels of the County Council's recent decision to raise the cost of parking permits in the town without any consultation with local residents.

"It's really important that the town has enough parking for both residents and visitors. At a time when there is huge pressure on parking in the town, this seems like a short-sighted decision." says local campaigner, Ian Eiloart.

"In contrast, the Lib Dem-run District Council has already pledged that it will not sell the long-stay car park that it owns further down North Street to developers."
