Progress on Priory face-lift3.50.18pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 16th Jan 2008
The remains of Lewes Priory have long been due for a face-lift, and now The Priory Trust in partnership with Lewes Town Council are bidding to restore the remains of the site. A Heritage Lottery Grant Application is nearing completion, as the landlords, Lewes Town Council, support the work of the Priory Trust. Lib Dem town councillor Hilary Black says: "The Town Council are fully in support of the The Priory Trust's project plans and are working to support this bid to gain funding for the restoration of this important heritage site for Lewes." Norman multi-millionaire, William de Warrenne, established the Cluniac Priory, below his Castle between 1078 and 1082. The Trust plans to establish pathways and signage to help visitors enjoy and understand the history of the site. In a tour of the Priory, by Dr Antony Freeman, Councillors were explained the history of the Priory, including its effect on the development of the Town, and its links to France and to the rest of England. "The importance of the Priory is difficult to exaggerate. The Great Church rivalled Chichester Cathedral in size, and exceeded it in riches", says Dr. Freeman. Hilary adds: "The 'Priory Park' project will enhance the space for local visitors and those from further afield, and add to the attraction of our historic County Town."
