Local MP to embark on programme of meetings with future of port "at a crossroads"

10.27.13am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 29th Jan 2008

Newhaven MP Norman Baker has today announced that he is embarking on a series of top-level meetings with key people to discuss the future of Newhaven port and regeneration of the surrounding area. The MP will be accompanied by leading Newhaven councillors in his meetings.

Welcoming the facelift promised to the port planned by Transmanche Ferries, Norman is calling for local decision-makers to come together to secure the regeneration of Newhaven.

Norman says: "The port is essential to the economy of Newhaven so any improvements that can be made to it are welcome. It generates business both in terms of freight and tourism so improving the road layout, services and appearance of the area is essential if the port is to remain competitive. However it is important that this is not the only step taken, and that there remains a concerted effort to redevelop Newhaven."

Norman is planning a series of visits to Newhaven over the coming months to meet with key investors in the area such as Transmanche and Oakdene Homes, the Chambers of Commerce and local councillors to discuss the way forward.

Norman says: "We have seen positive developments in Newhaven over the past few years such as the creation of Denton Island Training and Business Centre. But the port is at a crossroads. Is the port to develop as a 21st century facility or is it a thing of the past? I would like to see the port developed so that it continues to provide employment in Newhaven."

Norman adds: "This is a crucial time for Newhaven. Major works are needed at the harbour, investment opportunities must be created at the port and the uncertainty over housing developments must end in a good result for the people of Newhaven."
