Success on village roads11.30.26am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 13th Feb 2008
Local people have been celebrating the successful efforts of local campaigner Tom Hawthorne and Norman Baker MP to resurface Riddens Lane. The poor condition of the road surface had made it difficult for elderly people to walk to services such as Plumpton Post Office. Tom says: "I am very pleased with the result. The road is now fit for use, and this is making a real difference for elderly people. It has even helped increase trade at the post office." Local MP Norman Baker says: "With the high level of rainfall this year, rural roads can deteriorate quickly. We must continue to put pressure on the authorities to maintain them." Tom is now keen to discuss the potential for resurfacing other roads such as The Paddocks with local residents. Tom co-ordinates the Speed Indicator Device (SID) in rural areas to show drivers whether they are driving at a safe speed. He is calling for greater safety measures on roads particularly in East Chiltington, Streat through Plumpton village and by Plumpton College. "We have seen how dangerous these roads can be, particularly around T-junctions. The Plumpton Parish Action Plan recognises these dangers and recommends greater safety in these areas."
