Action on wasted Allotments12.30.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 27th Feb 2008
Local Lib Dems are pressing for better management of allotments in the town. There are two main problems: there are not enough allotments, and many are not properly maintained. "There is a big waiting list for allotments in Lewes." says town councillor, David Gray. "It is really unfortunate that these scarce resources are not being properly cared for by the people to whom they are allocated." The plots are often allowed to become overgrown and derelict with owners sometimes describing them as 'nature reserves'. Lib Dems on the Town Council are working to ensure that those allotments that are allowed to get into this state are given to people on the waiting list to be properly cared for. "The demand for allotments is growing and growing." says town councillor, Adam Barker. "People want a little bit of green space that they can call there own where they can grow vegetables. In an age where flying fruit and veg all over the world is contributing to global climate change people in Lewes are able to become a little more self sufficient, and I think that's a good thing." If you would like to get on the waiting list for an allotment give the Town Council a call on: 01273 471469
