Liberal Democrats pledge 4p tax cut2.00.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 8th Oct 2008
The Liberal Democrats have pledged to cut income tax by 4p in the pound, resulting in lower taxes for low and middle-income earners, while millionaires and polluters would be made to pay more. Party leader Nick Clegg says: "The Lib Dems are committed to cutting income tax by 4p." "Gordon Brown has found endless ways to tax you more. I think it's time that ordinary working people were given a break." Lewes MP Norman Baker has backed the plans. Norman says: "As the cost of living goes up, many local people are finding it tough to get by. The Lib Dems want to see lower and simpler taxes for ordinary people, with more taxes on the most polluting behaviour and the very rich. There has been record investment under Labour in public services like health. But the challenge now is to improve efficiency." Lib Dem Shadow Chancellor Vince Cable says; "Tax cuts should mostly be paid for by those who currently don't pay their fair share, government should declare war on the anti-social practices of rich individuals and companies who avoid tax." The Conservatives and Labour have committed to keeping taxes at the current level after the next general election.
