Spectacular Lib Dem win in Seaford

11.16.00am BST (GMT +0100) Sat 6th Jun 2009

The Lib Dems made gains in the county council elections on Thursday, winning all four seats in Seaford and Newhaven.

In a spectacular win, the Lib Dems took Seaford Sutton seat for the first time from the Conservatives with a majority of 116.

Local MP Norman Baker says: "This result clearly shows that the people of Seaford are not happy with the Conservative-run county council. Voters have supported the Lib Dems positive campaigning for a new youth centre in Seaford and to dispose of our waste in a more environmentally sound way than burning it."

Carolyn Lambert, the newly elected councillor for Seaford Sutton says: "People in Seaford have voted for change. That's why they've turned to the Norman Baker's Liberal Democrats. We have a positive vision for Seaford and I will fight for a new youth centre and a strong voice for Seaford at County Hall."

The Lib Dems also retained their seat in Ringmer and Lewes Bridge with sitting councillor Rosalyn St Pierre taking over 50% of the vote.
