Residents of Lewes and the surrounding area have put up with years of railway line closures, with buses jamming the narrow streets of Lewes and nearby country lanes. The Lewes-Uckfield line was closed in 1969, but simply re-instating this 7.3 mile length of track would open a connection in 10 minutes to a second route into London, relieving the pressure on the Brighton mainline and providing an alternative across East Sussex.
I support the Lewes Lib Dems campaign to improve public transport in Lewes, including the re-development of the Lewes-Uckfield line as an alternative to the Brighton mainline and the cancellation of the Southern Rail franchise.
