Save the Lewes Market Tower Roof

Planning permissions is in to repair the Market Tower on Market Street Lewes. Whilst we welcome Lewes District Council's plans to repair the Tower, we are dismayed to see that the application removes the cover from the market below. We cannot support this

The Market Tower, dating from 1792 is a Grade two listed monument and is in much need of repair.

The market was first held on the site of the Market Tower in 1791, and was reinstated more than 20 years ago.

The current market allows local producers to sell their wares under cover and loss of the roof will impact the viability of the market.

Save Lewes Market Tower Roof

We the undersigned reject any planning application which does not include a replacement roof for the Market Tower covered market. We ask Lewes District Council to withdraw the application and replace it with one which includes a replacement roof.
