Opposing Lewes District Council's Decision to Reduce Bin Collections

The Green District Council has decided, despite our resistance, to reduce bin collections in our area. At the Liberal Democrats, we recognise several key issues with this decision:

- Waste accumulation - it will be difficult, particularly for larger families, to manage increased waste over a two-week period

- Households producing non-infectious personal waste, such as those where carers, disabled people, older people, women, pet owners and families with young children with nappies live, will be particularly negatively affected by this change

- There have been little to no attempts to ask residents if they support the change itself - this lack of engagement is problematic

- The Council states that additional bins can be requested for specific needs, but we doubt this will be an accessible or clear process for those who need to do so

At the Lewes Liberal Democrats, we welcome and support ambitions to improve recycling rates, however if such changes adversely affect residents with little consideration of our community's needs, we oppose such changes and urge the District Council to propose real answers.
