Stand to be a Liberal Democrat Councillor

Help Shape the Future of East Sussex

The Government has now confirmed the final boundaries for Sussex’s new unitary councils. After months of uncertainty, we now know what we’re fighting for – and we need a great team of Liberal Democrat candidates to help shape the future of East Sussex.

The new council elections will take place in May 2027, replacing both East Sussex County Council and the district councils with a single new authority.

Most divisions are expected to elect two councillors, giving us the opportunity to put forward two Liberal Democrat candidates working together in every community.

Following our strong recent election results, we know there is growing support for the Liberal Democrats across East Sussex. With the new authority taking responsibility for everything from highways and social care to planning and local services, these will be some of the most important local elections our area has ever seen. We have a genuine opportunity to build a Liberal Democrat-led council that puts local people first.

Our team

Could You Be a Councillor?

We’re looking for people from all walks of life who care about their community and want to make a difference.

You don’t need previous political experience. What matters most is that you’re willing to listen, work hard, and stand up for local people.

Whether you’ve been considering standing for years or have only recently started thinking about it, we’d love to hear from you.

Submitting an application now doesn’t commit you to standing. It simply allows us to begin planning, provide training and support, and ensure you’re considered for the area that’s right for you if you decide to stand.

Why Stand?

Being a councillor is one of the most rewarding ways you can serve your community.

As a Liberal Democrat councillor you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Help residents solve problems and access the support they need.
  • Shape decisions affecting your local area.
  • Campaign for improvements to local services.
  • Work alongside local councillors, campaigners and James MacCleary MP to deliver real change.
  • Give your community a strong local voice.

“I first stood because I wanted to make a difference in the community where I live. What I didn’t realise at the time was just how rewarding being a councillor would be.

One of the best parts of the role is helping people, often when they’re at their most vulnerable. Whether it’s helping someone resolve a long running local issue, navigating council services or standing up for residents who feel they haven’t been heard, you can genuinely improve people’s lives.

I’ve also really valued working alongside James MacCleary MP. By working together, we’ve been able to achieve far more for local communities than either of us could alone and its really rewarding bringing national and local campaigning together.

Most importantly, being a Liberal Democrat councillor is about listening. The role isn’t about telling people what they should want but it’s about hearing what’s important to local communities and making sure those voices shape the decisions we take.

If you care about your area and want to make a real difference, I’d encourage you to consider putting yourself forward.”

"I have always served the community I live in and becoming a councillor meant I could do this in a new way. listening to my residents has been a huge pleasure especially when I can resolve their issues.

Much of the casework I am proud of remains private but I am pleased that I was able to support residents to challenge some  large developments. The support I received from councillor colleagues and our Lib Dem team made this possible and I have learned so much about how to be effective.

It seems a long time ago now but I was also relieved I was in a good postion to liaise with LDC and the Voluntary sector during Covid and help run Seaford Volunteer emergency team where we supported 100's of residents.

Working alongside to help get our MP has been another good example of the team work needed as a councillor to make a difference to the lives of others."
